Because of this, Kakihara becomes the main character (there are no real “heroes” in this story) of Ichi the killerfilm version. This leaves the audience, oddly enough, spending proportionately much more time with Kakihara, the manga’s main antagonist. This makes Ichi appear even more unstable in the movie and therefore harder to identify. By omitting much of this, the movie makes Ichi feel much more unstable and less relatable. We have a more direct idea of what drives it. Ichi hangs out with Elder Jijii more frequently, talking about his feelings and meditating on how Ichi’s unstable psychology works. Manga spends a lot of time meditating on the emotions of the characters. While this scene also occurs in the movie, it is much faster. In contrast, the mang features Ichi crying after murdering someone. Ichi’s first scene in the movie shows him masturbating to the end while a pimp violently rapes one of his prostitutes. Namely, the Ichi the killer The manga is a very internal and psychologically focused story, while the film is more about how that internal pain is externalized in the actions and behavior of the characters.įor example, the manga spends a lot of time exposing how Ichi is a strange person, telling readers that “he’s a pervert” or “he’s violent.” However, the movie only shows this to viewers. The difference, however, is how these events are framed. Many of the events take place in the film as in the original manga.
